Greek nanosafety platform

Main

The initiative to create the Greek nanosafety platform emerged following discussions to forge closer collaborations between teams from:

National Technical University of Athens

National Centre for Scientific Research, “Demokritos”

Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas

The founding members have significant collective expertise on nanomaterial properties evaluation, occupational safety, hazard assessment, nanotoxicology and nanoinformatics, gained through participation in national and european projects, service provision and consultation to state authorities.

Current situation in Greece:
    ● Lack of a National Hub raising the awareness of Academics, Researchers, Industrial partners, Medical Specialists, Clinicians, Citizens etc. regarding nanomaterials and the management of their risks
    ● Need for guidance regarding the implementation of knowhow and the foreseen regulations on the safe handling and use of nanomaterials
    ● Need for an extensive national repository of:
        ○ Companies manufacturing or processing nanomaterials or handling nanomaterial products
        ○ Facilities and infrastructure to conduct hazard, exposure and toxicological studies in Greece
        ○ Researchers and academics with expertise on the various aspects of nanomaterial risks and the development of strategies to mitigate them
        ○ Corporative executives with expertise on specialized nanomaterial applications etc.

Objectives

Statutory and coordinated response towards the impact of nanomaterials on safety during production, transfer, use and product disposal to the environment, as well as on public health and environmental sustainability, that have not yet been reflected to international and national safety regulations.

Connection of the laboratorial, with the commercial and legal framework / standardization of nanosafety in Greece, to actively respond to international and national requirements to manage risks thoughout the life cycle, using specialised expertise from distinguished academic scientists and corporative executives.

Refinement of nanomaterial and nanostructure definitions following the European standards.

The GR-NSP initiative

Governance

The governing members coordinate consecutively per year. Modification of governing members requires unanimous decision of the governing members or an absolute majority of members

Members

Members could be: Institutes, Organizations, Companies, Universities, Industries, Individuals. Registration of a new member requires unanimous decision of the governing members or an absolute majority of all members. GR-NSP meets at least once per year, as well as whenever issues arise.

Sources of funds

Own resources, participation in funded projects (networking activities). Provision of advanced technical and consultancy services to industry and state agencies.
